In-home event exemptions for candidates and parties

August 7, 2023

In the course of volunteering personal services, individuals may spend up to $1,000 per candidate, per election for food, beverages and invitations to host a campaign event in the individual’s home, church or community room without making a contribution. A similar exemption enables a volunteer to spend up to $2,000 per calendar year for in-home events in support of political party committees without making a contribution.

Any amount spent over the applicable exemption limit must be reported by the candidate or party committee as an in-kind contribution. The exempt amount is not reportable. For more information on these exemptions, visit our web pages on volunteer activity for candidates and party committees and watch the Volunteer Activity video on our YouTube channel.
